Discussing comics vs books... and feeling crappy...

Feeling somewhat shitty today. :-/ Ugh. :-P I don't know what my body is on... But my belly hurts a bit and my legs... o.O Weird. And I am tired as fuck. I'll most likely go to bed ridiculously early (for me).

Work today went quite well, actually. Gladly I worked my first hours in the storage with the kids books there, but after that I had to sit in the information desk for four hours. Guh... Not fun when you don't feel to great. Good thing they have comfortable chairs there and it wasn't that many visitors to the library today. One of the guys working there and me talked World of Warcraft while being in the information desk, since there were no visitors that wanted help anyway for a while. Now I think I'll stalk him on WoW.... ;-) He is a family man and a little older then me, but really fun and nice. He thinks it is cool that I am such a nerd.

We also talked about comics and graphic novels and how to incorporate them in the library better. And how to deal with them. An ever on going struggle. Ever since the 1970's / 1980's when there was a HUGE debate about video violence and gaming violence (in Sweden), comics have been looked upon as something bad that should be avoided by the older generation librarians. I'd love to change that, somehow. There are some REALLY good comics being released with regularity today. OK, so not as much in Sweden as in the USA and Japan, but still! Quite a lot! Good quality comics and graphic novels should just as obviously be a part of a library as books and DVD's (as is the case today). It was an interesting talk I had with him, and he thought it was awesome that I wanted to work with teen and young adult books, since not many librarians like to work with that genre. Well, well. :-D

And since we were talking nerdiness, I mentioned the book I'd found that takes a scientific look at fanfiction and all it can mean to writers and readers of the same. It also gives tips and ideas how you can work with fanfiction in schools and in libraries. He was really interested in this! And had never heard about fanfiction, but thought it was really cool and could probably be something to work with in the future.

Guys. After that 15-30 min discussion I was in seventh heaven. Here is one of the librarians that many listen to in the big city library, and he thought my thoughts and ideas were cool and not at all silly. My gosh... o.O He might end up a lower boss to, so... Good thing, good thing... Not to mention he is just a really cool and fun guy. :-D

So despite feeling kinda shitty body-wise, my day ended up pretty nice.

I even went to the city indoor swimming pool / public pool (what is the word to use, anyway?) and swam quite a few laps. [livejournal.com profile] peting73 inspired me the other day, but after feeling the way I did today, maybe it wasn't the smartest thing I could have done. :-P I was soooo knocked out, my legs were shaking when I left the place to go home. No, not smart at all. Probably one of the reasons I need to go to bed crazy early tonight. Not gonna do that again tomorrow, let me tell you. :-P

I am behind as fuck on my f-list, and I want to apologize for that. I am working on getting caught up on you all... I'm just crazy busy these days. :-P Might slow down in the future. We'll see.

Sorry you're not feeling well. That does sound like an interesting talk, though. It's always nice to meet a fellow nerd somewhere you don't expect.

Oh yes, indeed. :-) We had a lot of fun in the information desk. Made the time move faster, since I had to be there for four hours. :-P There are nerds where you least expect it! Well... maybe one should expect it in a library.... *lol*

"Swimming pool" is typically the English common usage, or "public pool" if you like. Bath house is a totally different connotation.

[identity profile] kseenaa.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
AHA! Public pool is probably the word I am looking for. :-) Thank you! Some words still eludes me even after all these years... I can't believe people tell me I speak good english! I've lost so much of it over the years. :-P

Sorry to hear you aren't really well, I hope you will be better soon. But it sounds like a good day overall, and that book, you want to share? I have been lookning for something like that?

[identity profile] kseenaa.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it is annoying as hell. I am used to having severe pain with regularity (thank you Endomatriosis!) but that doesn't mean I have to like it. :-/ I feel pretty much like shit. :-P

It is a good thing when you can have good days despite that, I'd say. ;-) The books are really good! :-D

Both books are in swedish, but I doubt that is a problem for you, is it? ;-)

Book about comics:
Serier på Biblioteket - Allt du vill veta om serier du inte visste fanns
Författare: Daniel Gustavsson
Förlag: BTJ Förlag
Utgivningsår: 2010

Book about fanfiction:
Författande fans
Författare: Christina Olin-Scheller och Patrik Wikström
Förlag: Studentlitteratur AB
Utgivningsår: 2010

There you go. :-) That should help you find them at your local library. ;-)

i know the feeling, and to make it even more fun I "enjoy" this wonderful feeling two times a mounth...
Thanks, I will look for them, I would like to take a fanfiction take on my study too, or well, do a study of the Th-fandoms relation to fanfiction :)

Twice a month? UGH! :-/ I so do not envy you. :-P Once a month for me. Sometimes it's not so bad, and sometimes it bringth the big ol' sledgehammer of doom.... like now, apparently. :-/

Fun thing is, when you read the fandom book, they do mention Tokio Hotel fanfiction! *lol* I haven't read it seriously yet, but from what I could gather there is a lot of Harry Potter fanfic used as examples, but other fandoms get mentions to. :-)

I'm interested to know, do the libraries you work in stock entirely Swedish language books? Do you have sections for English books? And so, related to graphic novels, would they have to be versions traslated into Swedish?

Enjoy your early night :)

[identity profile] kseenaa.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Most libraries I've worked in have books in several languages. Mostly in those languages that is most common in the area from immigrants from various countries.

The big city library, where I work now, stocks up on books from all the countries where immigrants in the city and the county are from. So there are a lot of books in various languages. A special area in the library dedicated to literature in other languages. The most common languages around immigrants here are finnish, arabian and persian. Then we have a HUGE section of english books, since most swedes have english as their second languge, and speak it fluently.

When it comes to comics and graphic novels though, we have them in three languages. Swedish, english and finnish. Most of them are in swedish though. There are quite a few good swedish comic/graphic novel artists lately that have some awesome stories to tell! :-)

(I even found Asterix in french the other day!)

Sorry to hear you're not feeling well! Hope you feel much better today! <3

Sadly not. :-/ Pain has kept itself pretty constant. I am fed up with my body at the moment. :-P

It is good that one can have good days besides that, though. :-) Some of the librarians I work with are a bit... odd.... In a not good way. But most of them are quite nice and a lot of fun. :-D

[identity profile] ruchirahni.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
nice talk! glad that you were able to publicize your skills like that. it's important, i think, especially that you did it with someone you respect.

i just went to the gym again yesterday and swam for about a half hour as well! what a coincidence.. haven't been in literally months, haha.

[identity profile] kseenaa.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't know if it were skills, but my nerdiness shining through! X-D All the librarians there are pretty awesome (except a few that are very odd... in a not good way...).

It was really nice to go there and swim, but alas... it didn't help my pain. :-P Really sick of it by now, let me tell you!
