OMG! I've slacked off on this, haven't I? I'll just pick it up again. Here goes...

Great things to read! (Books/Comics/Fanfic)

Alright, so this one actually connects a bit with the last 100 things post I did. The post about the book Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux.

This book, I'll be talking about this time is called Phantom written by Susan Kay.

She has taken Leroux's book... gone through it with a spyglass, found all the little details, even small mentions, and taken them to heart... and written one hell of a story. About Erik aka Phantom of the Opera and his life. From the moment he is born until he dies. It is a very sad emotional story. He does not have a happy life, let me tell you. But he meets a lot of people, who tries to influence him towards good... and a lot of people who influences him towards bad. And always, always his face and how his body looks follows him like a demon. He just can't get away from it.

I've read this book twice, and I am currently reading it again. It is one of those books that just... grabs a hold of you and just can not put down. Sometimes you see Erik from his own point of view... and sometimes you see him from the point of view from those he meets... And of course all the happenings under the Paris Operahouse is there to. But this time you see them in a WHOLE different light... because there is a reason for everything that he does. And even though the Phantom is the bad guy... you feel for him and understand him.

Really, I don't know what else to say about this book... There is death around Erik, cruelty... oh so much cruelty from he is a baby really... and it just won't stop. He is trying so many times to live a normal life, but society of that era just won't let him. Instead he is slowly turning insane by the way people react to him... feeling there is no place for him really.

I've always wondered how a person with such a physical stigma would manage today... Better, I hope. A lot better. Because Erik's entire life is pretty much a nightmare. And I really feel sorry for him. No wonder he is driven insane, more or less.

I really do love this book and can not recommend it enough. It shouldn't be to hard to find in a library, but if you have trouble, it is available at Amazon for a pretty good price, I'd say.

Great things to read! (Books/Comics/Fanfic)

Going back to books again! :-)

This book I read when I was quite young, which might not have been to smart.... *lol* I actually blame [livejournal.com profile] spicehobbit for this one to! I think I was 15-16 years old when I read this... I think because she had seen the musical for the first time around there and was squeeing all over the place. Not sure.

Anyway, the book I am talking about is Phantom of the Opera written by Gaston Leroux. It was published in book form for the first time 1910. Didn't go so well, until various film adaptions and musical adaptions were made.

But the book, people... The BOOK! It is quite amazing actually. Sure, the language is a bit aged, but it all adds to it. It is a very gothic mystery story, if you can call it that.

And there are a a lot more interesting side-characters in this book then there is no room for in the musical (I especially love the Police Inspector who tries to solve the phantom-mystery...). Also, quite a bit of hints as to where the Phantom, or Erik as his name is, where he comes from... where he has been... and what he has done before he ended up under the Paris Opera. Only hints, but they give a lot to the story. Gives it another life then the musical, I feel... but that might just be my personal opinion.

Very poetic, sad, melancholy... and beautiful. There is romance to, of course. And one can discuss if the right guy won the girl in the end... One never really knows. But that is the beauty of the book. There is nothing right or wrong with the characters action. On the surface, yes... but then you start to think... and this book makes you think... why is it right? And wrong? Could it be seen in another way? And usually you can...

Sad story, with no real winners I'd say.

I can't recommend this book highly enough. It is a classical book that I think as many as possible should read.

It is most likely available in most libraries, but if you can't find it there...

Amazon has it available right here:

Right.

Great things to read! (Books/Comics/Fanfic)

So. I read fanfic in a lot of fandoms. How much in either fandom, that varies... But I do read now and then in most of them. :-) The first fandom where I really started to get into fanfics was... the Xena-fandom. I've read A TON of fanfics in this fandom. Femme-slash mostly, but also slash and het. I have a few favorites that I go back to with regularity. And this? This is one of those. It is.. HILARIOUS! Not to mention sweet... and very sexy to. ;-)

It's about Joxer... and Ares God of War. Now, for those not in the fandom, I'll give you a photo of each character so you have a mental image of these two. ;-) (Both clickable for bigger, of course!)

Ares, God of War:

Joxer:

Now in the show Ares was just that. God of War. The character wanted chaos and war. Had warlords he favored. Made sure kingdoms fought. Etc, etc... He was a bad guy most of the time... but had a soft spot for Xena and her friends and at times.... helped them to. And got helped by them as well, when he ended up in trouble... They had a strange love/hate relationship to Ares. Sometimes bad guy, sometimes good guy... and sometimes just a pain in the ass with all his wars... But one thing never changed. Ares was dangerous. VERY dangerous... He was a God. And he was War.

And then there was Joxer... Joxer wanted to be one of Ares favored warriors... And liked to pretend he was to. But. He wasn't. Joxer was the comedic relief in the show. He was clumsy and failed pretty much with everything he did in some lol-worthy way. He had a HUGE heart though... and a strange bravery. Even though he was scared as FUCK most of the time, he still stood up for his friends and tried to help them. Even succeeded at times, mostly by luck. But he always tried. Bravery of a lion, they said... but no skill what so ever.

Now in this fic... Not only do they pair these two up... they genderbend one of them to. X-D

Ares is having a tough time... and he complains to his family. His sisters... That is, Aphrodite and Athena. Godesses... Female godesses... Also quite dangerous when they set their mind on something. They gets feed up with their brother... and decidedes to teach him a lesson... and turn him into a woman.

So, all of a sudden... War is not a man. War is a woman. Hilarity ensues where Ares at first is quite happy with the addition to her/his body (woo... boobs...cool...) and then quite horrified with the loss of parts.... (holy shit! my cock is gone! *faints*)

I won't say anything more, but to say a lot of hilarity ensues as Ares tries to deal with troublesome warlords who don't like to be bossed around by women, gods or not.... The not so happy time of the month... exploring her new body... and trying to get back at her sisters.... And then there is Joxer... and his strange gifts to her various temples... and his prayers to his favorite godess...

It is a wonderful little story. And I do return to it a lot. Even printed it out so I wouldn't lose it. Language might not be the best here and there, but... it is STILL so good! Such a wonderful feeling in the entire story.

When it comes to Xena fanfic, this is one of those fanfic I recommend with all my love of said fandom. It is absolutly wonderful. A real feel good story.

Alright!

Great things to read! (Books/Comics/Fanfic)

This time... I'll be talking about a comic. That's always been with me from when I was a little girl. You think I'll be talking Donald Duck now, right? X-D Nah, I'll save the ducks for later. :-) Nope. This time I'll talk about...

The adventures of Tintin!

And no. I don't mean the movie. (Even though it was actually much better then I thought! A pleasant surprise!)

I mean the original comics. :-)

If you haven't read them? You are missing out. Good as the movie is, the comics surpass them by far! Hergé (aka Georges Remi) was a BRILLIANT artist. If you look at the artwork in Tintin, the backgrounds and areas and houses and cars... and everything.... is amazingly detailed. While the characters... are not. More or less caricatures. Still, he makes it work. And makes it work wonderfully. :-) So art-wise, the comics are amazing. The stories? Yes. They are amazing to. Hergé did a TON of research for his stories. He didn't necessarily travel to all these places, but he did extensive research still. And it shows in the stories. When they take place in a real area, most of the places described do exist. Or has existed. Or is based on places already in existance, and Hergé figured out his own versions of various places. He even invented new countries for Tintin to visit! That are so well-described and researched, they feel very very real. :-)

So that is awesome. And then.... then there is all the characters. My gosh... Such a myriad of characters he created for this series. SURE Tintin is the lead, but seriously? There are a TON of characters in these comics, all just as colourful and just as important for the stories. My favorite is Captain Haddock! :-D Who, in himself, is interesting... since he is an alcoholic... and Hergé plays his alcoholism for various jokes. As a kid, I didn't reflect on it as such. But as an adult, you see so much more in the comics then you do as a kid. Not just with Haddock, but with Professor Calculus as well... Well, to be honest, as an adult you see all these quirks with ALL Hergés characters, that you didn't think about as a kid. Quirks that are quite serious if you examine them closer as an adult. :-) Makes re-reading them very very interesting.

Not to mention all the... not so cool views of race in these comics, that you didn't react to as a kid either, but really really react to today. But one has to remember when these were published. The first one, Tintin in the Land of the Soviets, was published 1930... as was the second one Tintin in the Congo... The harsh view of race was widly spread them, and everyone, well... most... didn't see any strange with it. Hergé did later admit he could have done those better, but alas... To late then. :-) He did do some re-drawings of some of the comics, and they did get re-releases. So those out on the market today are not quite as harsh when it comes to race and such. :-)

I am actually planning to re-read them in the right order, since I have never done that. They have them all at the main library. I've read them all at various times during my childhood and teens and as an adult too. But really... I haven't read them in order. :-) And I kinda wanna do that. So I think I will! :-D So yes. Read The Adventures of Tintin - the comics! They are very very worth a read-through and holds up VERY well, despite being quite old by now!

Ageless classics!

The order they were released:

1. Tintin in the Land of the Soviets
2. Tintin in the Congo
3. Tintin in America
4. Cigars of the Pharaoh
5. The Blue Lotus
6. The Broken Ear
7. The Black Island
8. King Ottokar's Sceptre
9. The Crab with the Golden Claws
10. The Shooting Star
11. The secret of the Unicorn
12. Red Rackham's Treasure
13. The Seven Crystal Balls
14. Prisoners of the Sun
15. Land of Black Gold
16. Destination Moon
17. Explorers on the Moon
18. The Calculus Affair
19. The Red Sea Sharks
20. Tintin in Tibet
21. The Castafiore Emerald
22. Flight 714
23. Tintin and the Picaros
24. Tintin and Alph-Art (Unfinsihed work, published posthumously)

And lastly, the dogs name is Milou, gawd dammit! NOT Snowy, wth? Now that was one thing that bothered the FUCK out of me when I watched the movie! Milou... MILOU!!! NOT SNOWY!!! *grumbles*

{Take the 100 Things challenge!}
Alright. I've been thinking and thinking about what to do for the 100 Things Blogging Challenge... And I think I know what to do now. It wasn't easy... But here goes the first post. :-)

{Take the 100 Things challenge!}

My 100 things will be:

Great Things to read (Books/Comics/Fanfic)!

Considering my profession, my masters thesis AND what I like to do on my free time... It really was the best option. :-D Some of these post will most likely be NSFW, depending on the book/comic/fanfic, but I'll mark it so and put behind a cut if that is the case. :-)

And this, my first post, is actually connected to TWO of the subjects! :-D Because it is a fantasy book series. There are three books in the series and they are amazing. :-) AND they are written by a friend on my f-list, [livejournal.com profile] shapinglight aka Kim Fielding. Who also writes some of the BEST fanfic in the Buffy-fandom out there! Chances are, she'll show up again with a fanfic or two... ;-)

ANYWAY!

Her fantasy series it was I'll be talking off today. :-) And since I bought them... Have a photo!

Three books on a bed )

First book is called Stasis and introduces the main character, Ennek. He lives in a country that is very much a harsh city-state called Praesidium. And the ruler of said state... is his Father. On one of Enneks adventures down Below in the Keep where he lives with his father... where those who have broken any law (thievery, prostitution etc and also homosexuality) in Praesidium is set in the magic state called stasis, a state they are held in where they are not alive and not dead is without any feelings.... There Ennek runs into a man that... makes sounds, noises... and looks at him with unseeing eyes...

This chance meeting during his childhood sets many events in motion for Ennek, who as an adult and the Chiefs son, has had to hide who he really is...

The books are VERY well written, I'd say! Kim Fielding is a brilliant author, which of course after reading her fanfics I already knew. So to go all the way and buy these books in printed version was NOT a hard decision. ;-) To be able to follow Enneks adventures, and later... together with his partner Miner... has been an amazing ride! The twists and turns in the plots came and hit me right out of left field everytime! (Well, except once... *lol*)

All three of these books have been written during NaNoWriMo, and it is really really impressive how she has managed to create such a living breathing world filled with harsh political leaders, magicians, evil and good... and also mix in homosexuality and the difficulties it is to be gay in a world where that is punishable with a fate worse then death... I really did love these books and am very happy to have them in my bookshelf. :-)

If you wanna buy them to, you can on Amazon (where I got mine):

Stasis (part one) right HERE. (Kindle edition HERE.)
Flux (part two) right HERE. (Kindle edition HERE.)
Equipoise (part three) right HERE. (Kindle edition HERE.)

They are definitely worth it. :-)

Next of these posts? Comic, fanfic, book? No idea. We'll see, I suppose. :-D
