Mom is fine. It was not a blood clot. *takes a deep breath* Phew... Apparently she has a bad infection in her lower leg though, so... she is on antibiotics now. My brother is the best though. Seriously. He is four years younger then me, but as I told him yesterday, he should have been born before me. We talked a lot, me and my brother. It felt good. I have always felt guilty for moving so far away from the countryside city I grew up in. Where mom lives at the outskirts of. My brother lives much closer. It takes him 10-15min to drive to mom. It takes 2hours for me. I also always feel guilty for not being there and helping mom with things that she needs help with. My brother very lovingly and very verbally hit me very hard over the head telling me what an idiot I am for thinking that. Tough love. We grew up on it, and we are much the same. :-) He is the best.
Anyway. Since Thursday my moms leg had been acting strange and was very painful for her. Sure her knees are bad (thanx to her weight), but this felt different. Strange. Itchy and painful, so her sister (my aunt) told her to go to the Docs. Sure, mom said. But not until Monday. Maybe it will go away. (So typical of her.) So yesterday, Monday, she went to see the Doc at the tiny district health care centre in the countryside city close to were she lives. He suspected a blood clot and told her she needed to go to the Emergency at the hospital in the the next town (closest hospital). She called my brother and tried calling me (I think I was driving at the time, hence I didn't answer the phone). And off she went to the hospital, 30mins drive away. There she had to wait a couple of hours... well a lot of hours, actually, since it wasn't lethal, she could breath and all, so... while waiting for the Doc, the nurses took all kinds of tests on her, so when the Doc finally got to her (at 1am), he had all the test-results. And it was a infection in her leg. A bad one, but far from lethal. Less dangerous then a blood clot. After some checking on mom, she got a prescription for some strong antibiotics that she is eating now.
So, talked to her today, and she is doing perfectly fine. Just highly annoyed with her leg. And she apologized for worrying me and my brother. *face-palm* That is so my mom. It is a part of the job-description as a daughter or son to worry, you know, mom? *shakes head*
Anyway. My brothers and mine collusion to work on getting mom to lose weight is still in full swing. She NEEDS to lose weight one way or another. I have no idea how we'll talk her into it and support her, but hell... We'll try. We'll try...

Date: 2010-05-10 09:53 am (UTC)And now she got the help of a dietitian. And that is great! Bloody marvelous, really! BUT! Again. She says she is doing like the dietitian says, but she really isn't. She has this way of reward eating. Like... "Oh, I am done all these things today, I deserve a little something." And she eats for comfort to when she has a bad day. Combine it all, and it is getting bad. :-/ She wants to do one of those surgeries where you make the stomach smaller, hence you can't eat that much. But to be allowed to do this, you have to lose weight first, to show you are serious... Catch 22 really.
Sorry about my rant. :-P

Date: 2010-05-10 12:39 pm (UTC)Something with her coffee- could it be a piece of fruit? Or some crackers or something? And if she really wants to reward herself at the end of the day, maybe she could try eating smaller pieces and you guys could work on her eating more slowly rather than eating a larger serving more quickly?
Also, I would definitely put all her sweets in jars that you can't see through and put them in a cupboard instead of in plain sight (if that's where they are). I read once that people snack 40% less if they can't see the sweets and for your mom 40% less might be a decent amount.

Date: 2010-05-11 06:16 am (UTC)She does eat a lot of fruit, which is of the good of course. It is just if she could leave the other sweets alone, you know? If you count it all together it turns out quite a lot. Add breakfast and dinner to that, I mean..... *shakes head*
And she has an old fashioned pantry already, since her house is so old. A room where all the food is. Also of the good, if she could stay out of it. :-P
