I totally understand where you're coming from because, like I said on my one post, I love Sherlock Holmes but none of these new ones are my Sherlock. It just doesn't feel right! :P
I agree with you about the Avengers -- I really only wanted to see it at first because it was a Joss Whedon movie, and you know, I'm a Joss kind of girl. I'd never see any of the other superhero movies leading up to it, and now I've seen Thor and Iron Man and I don't think they were anywhere as great as the Avengers is. *braces for the wrath of Marvel fans* Like you said, it was huge and full of action and FUN and wit (because Whedon) and a perfect summer action movie, in my opinion.
BUT, I think that a huge majority of the Tom Hiddleston love comes from him as a person and not necessarily Loki. Yeah, I see all the Loki adoration on Tumblr, but I think a lot of it is girls loving on him because of him. I actually started crushing on him before I even saw Avengers because of all his press interviews I saw on YouTube. He's an incredibly well-spoken, intelligent man who's an unashamed fanboy in some ways, who's not afraid to act dorky, and as an actor he's really good but he doesn't take himself over-seriously and the combination makes him quite charming. Especially to U.S. girls who consider an English accent to be really hot. :P Plus, as an unabashed Shakespeare nerd, his love for Shakespeare's works gets me hot. xD
I also think part of the Loki-love is the same as the Spike-love when he first started on Buffy. He's a snarky bad-boy who's kind of cute but once you get to know him he's still a villain that the girls want to see redeemed and sexy. I feel like I'm in the minority because I love Tom but I'm just eh on Loki. xD
