Sometimes your best friends get the best ideas. Yesterday
spicehobbit called and was in full fangirl mood squeeling in my ear. :-D Why, you ask? Well the new Robin Hood movie staring Russel Crowe started showing here. Cue me squeeling like a fangirl to. Now wait, you might ask.... Why would this make us squee like two fangirls? This is a long story. And since I have a ton of new followers, I'll tell you. But only the short version. ;-)
See, me and
spicehobbit have know each other since we were 13. We are both 32, going on 33 this year. Meaning we have known each other for 20 years by now. :-) Geez... Time flies. X-D Anyway, back to Robin Hood. From the moment we became friends, both of us discovered that we shared a love for history. Basically we are history geeks. And in about the same time that we got to know each other (a year after) the movie Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves had its premiere... and the old TV-show Robin of Sherwood started airing on one of the biggest TV-channels in Sweden... This played on both our love for history, historic clothes and drama. To say we devoured anything and everything about Robin Hood would be an understatement. We have seen almost all Robin Hood movies there is. I am not kidding. We wrote fanfic and drew fanart before we even knew what that was. We even made little dolls and sculptures inspired by the Robin of Sherwood series.
So of we went last night to see the new movie. Was the new Robin Hood a disappointment? Did Russel Crowe do the role justice? Well, yes. No one can argue that Russel Crowe is one hell of an actor. And especially in historic / adventure settings. I really am not that fond of his movies where the story takes place in modern times. But in movies like this and like Gladiator, he really shines. He is doing a great job. So does the rest of the cast. To have Cate Blanchett doing Lady Marion is a stroke of genius. She is brilliant in whatever she does. And then there is Max von Sydow... That man is 81 years old, and he acts the hell out of the rest of the cast. Man. I love that actor.
Anyway, this version of Robin Hood takes a rather darker take on the tale. And it is set before he became an outlaw, trying to find an explanation to why. Of course, no one knows, since there is no sure way to say if there even was a Robin Hood for real. But I like this take on the tale. I do. I also like that it is down and dirty, getting gritty. I like the take they had on the Crusade. And the take they had on King Richard. Not a hero king, by far, definitely not. I adored Eleanor of Aquitaine, seriously. What a kick ass old lady. And there are records saying that the real Eleanor of Aquitaine was just that. A kick ass old lady that you did not wanna cross. The actress, Eileen Atkins, showed that perfectly. The complicated politics during these times and how wars were fought and won (or lost?). All in all a great movie!
Oh, and lets not forget the music. Of all the movies set in medieval times, this one must have the best musical score, holy shit! I was literary stomping my foot in time with the music here and there. So. Damn. Good. Medieval Party music, I shit you not! I MUST get this soundtrack! There is just no other option for it. :-D
Not the best take on Robin Hood, but definitely a good one. :-) I loved it. Go see it.
